About Fine Art Photo
Fine Art Photo has been the cornerstone of premier photofinishing in Central Pennsylvania since 1951. As a cherished family-owned and operated business, we take immense pride in o๏ฌering our customers access to the latest services and products within the photographic industry. Our comprehensive o๏ฌerings, from our retail photo store and portrait studio to our professional photo lab and services for corporate events and sports, ensure that we consistently deliver top-notch photographic solutions for both consumers and businesses across Central PA. Over the years, our family has evolved alongside the dynamic photography industry, growing and adapting to its changes, solidifying Fine Art Photo as the go-to choice whenever photography comes to mind.
Founded in 1951, Fine Art Photo, Inc. opened its doors in Harrisburg, PA, becoming the very first photography lab in the area. As a family-owned and operated business, we take immense pride in our legacy and commitment to the art of photography. In 1954, we made history by becoming the first lab in Pennsylvania to process color film. This pioneering spirit was embodied by James Knaub, a U.S. Air Force Veteran, who joined the company that same year.
Throughout the mid-70s, Fine Art Photo experienced significant growth alongside the booming photography industry. We expanded to seven stores across Central PA, including our enduring location in Lemoyne. The photo industry has evolved drastically since our inception, with over 4,600 retail specialty photo shops in the U.S. during the 80s. Today, as digital technology has reshaped the landscape, fewer than 1,300 such shops remain.James and his wife Brenda dedicated their lives to keeping Fine Art Photo thriving,
preserving family memories and serving local businesses across Central PA. Their children, Gary and Tina, joined the company in their teens and have been integral to its success for over 40 years. Today, they continue to uphold the family tradition, with the same passion and dedication that has defined Fine Art Photo for 75 years.
The Knaub family believes in giving back to the community and continues to support local schools, sports teams, non-profit organizations, and veteran organizations.
For 75 years, Fine Art Photo, Inc. has been an integral part of the Harrisburg area. Few businesses—especially “mom and pop” shops—can claim that kind of longevity. Our doors first opened in 1951, the same year I Love Lucy debuted. We printed photos of the first Corvettes sold in 1953 and witnessed the rise of Elvis in 1954. We’ve been present for pivotal moments in history, from Dr. Jonas Salk’s polio vaccine announcement in 1954 to the launch of the first astronauts into space in 1959. We watched with the world as JFK was assassinated in 1963, helped families recover memories after the Flood of ’72, and endured the Three Mile Island nuclear accident in 1979.๏ปฟ

As the world continued to change, so did we. We were here through the rise of personal computers in the 1980s, the birth of the internet in the 1990s, and into the 2000s as the world experienced the events of September 11, 2001 and the launch of Facebook, forever changing how people connect and share their lives. We also witnessed the digital photography revolution and the rapid evolution of technology that transformed how images are captured, shared, and preserved. Most recently, we remained committed to our
community through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, continuing to help families and businesses preserve and share their most important memories.
Through 14 presidencies and decades of change, we have remained a constant. How many businesses—let alone photography businesses—can say they’ve been part of so much history? Not many, and we’re proud to be one of them.
